Gearbox Reconditioning Process.

Automatic transmissions:

The whole gearbox is cleaned externally and examined for any damage. If there is no visible damage, the transmission core is then dismantled to determine the suitability for reconditioning. The gearbox is dismantled and all components are sorted and prepped for cleaning.

All gearbox parts and cases are thoroughly washed in a 3-part cleaning process. Cases and valve bodies are washed separately. The casings are then dipped in a mild acid to de-scale and restore the aluminium to its original finish.

The Valve body is tested and calibration checked to factory specification. spring-loaded valves, check balls and servo pistons are individually checked for function and replaced where necessary. Solenoids are tested and replaced where necessary.

After cleaning and testing, the transmissions are bench-assembled in our rebuild area. The hydraulic integrity of each unit is tested before the valve bodies are mounted.

Manual transmissions:

The full manual gearbox is cleaned externally and examined for any damage. If there is no visible damage, the transmission core is then dismantled to determine the suitability for reconditioning. The gearbox is dismantled and all components are sorted and prepped for cleaning.

Casings and individual parts are thoroughly cleaned and inspected and sorted into three groups: scrap, reuse or rework. Transmission or transfer case parts that fail inspection are replaced. The casings are then dipped in a mild acid to de-scale and restore the aluminium to its original finish. All reworked parts are machined to original manufacturer’s specification for rebuilding.

The gearbox is then furbished with new bearings, synchronizer rings, gaskets, seals, and any necessary hard parts. The transmission case is then rebuilt and all internal clearances and end floats are reset to manufacturer’s specifications.

Once the rebuilt transmission or transfer case is completed, it undergoes a final build test and inspection before fitting to the vehicle for road testing.
